Nikki Sixx, a.k.a. Frank Feranna, was born on December 11, 1958 in San Jose, California. Named after his father, who left the family shortly after Nikki's birth, Nikki stayed with his grandparents while his mother went out with different guys. At seventeen, he decided to move to Los Angeles with the hope of accomplishing his dream: become a rock star.
In Los Angeles, after learning to play bass, Nikki auditioned for the band London. The singer was quite the bragger and Nikki ended up leaving the band. He tried the band Sister after that, but that didn't last long either.
In 1981, Nikki met Tommy Lee and together they searched for possible band members. First to be recruited was Mick Mars, who posted an ad in the local paper. Vince Neil, who went to high school with Tommy, soon joined after that and the band was formed. After debating on names (Nikki suggested "Christmas", saying that it was a name no one would forget), they decided on Motley Crue.
Along with the fame and fortune came drugs. Nikki was the worst user, according to the band, Nikki included. His "favorite" drug was heroin. He loved it until December 23, 1987 when he was pronounced dead for two minutes from a heroin overdose. After that incident, Nikki promised himself that he would get clean.
Nikki, as well as Mick, has been with the Crue for all 20+ years, writing songs and playing his signature Gibson Thunderbird. But he has also done some work besides Motley Crue. Nikki has founded his own charity, "Running Wild in the Night", through Covenant House to help runaways just like himself off the street. Nikki has also wrote a memoir, The Heroin Diaries, about his addiction through diary entrees he wrote throughout '86 and '87.
Having been completely drug-free for over six years, Nikki has done considerably well, both personally and professionally. Let us fans hope he stays that way and continues to make Motley Crue a success!
